Javier Fernandez receives Nelson Yield-Limiting Factors Graduate Student Scholarship from the ASA

Javier Fernandez, a Ph.D. candidate in Ciampitti Lab at Kansas State University, will receive the 2021 Nelson Yield-Limiting Factors Graduate Student Scholarship from the American Society of Agronomy (ASA).

This award will be formally presented in Nov-08 at the 2021 ASA Awards Ceremony during the ASA-CSSA-SSSA Annual Meetings in Salt Lake City, Utah. Javier is one of five students nationwide chosen to receive this scholarship. The purpose of the Nelson Yield-Limiting Factors Graduate Student Scholarship is to encourage students to pursue research and careers in support of the diagnosis yield-limiting factors in agronomy.

Javier is an agronomy scientist passionate about research and using data analytics to optimize farming strategies in agriculture. He earned his B.S at the Northeast National University, Argentina. Nowadays, he is a Ph.D. candidate at Kansas State University under Dr. Ignacio Ciampitti.

His current research focuses on the physiological determinants of nitrogen uptake and utilization efficiencies in corn, as affected by genotype and management factors. He provides leadership for several organizations, having served in numerous roles and committees at the departmental and community level.


He has received recognition for his work through numerous honors, including Fulbright and Gamma Sigma Delta awards. During his Ph.D., Javier has presented his research at national and international conferences and has authored and co-authored more than a dozen refereed journal and extension articles. He is also a member of the American Society of Agronomy, Soil Science Society of America, and the Crop Science Society of America.

The Nelson Yield-Limiting Factors Scholarship focuses on leadership, accomplishments and the nominee's long-term personal goals to research and develop improved diagnostic techniques and solutions to yield-limiting factors in agronomy.

This scholarship is provided through the Agronomic Science Foundation by the Werner L. Nelson Fund and administered through the American Society of Agronomy.
